Yes, the way you came up with the Dunnoy is FUNNY! But I will tell you now that I was thinking of the 10" Tannoy for the reverb channels, not because it "does everything well", but because it is acceptable in terms of scale, and it has tone, and it m...

Romy, I actually said what you just said; sorry you did not get it. This is why your idea will "work" for me. All that "native ambience" stuff is fine; but who knows what it is, or how much, or what it's worth in a "typical" recording, let alone how ...

Who the hell knows how a given LP was recorded, mixed down, mastered, mothered and stamped, etc., etc, except it probably was NOT a simple "figure 8" mic. Whoever tried to "standardize" this process never got many recordings I care to listen to. If w...

We had some background for the video on this site, I think, some of it, perhaps, starting with the injection channel, years ago. I do wonder how much a "cold call" viewer, with no "background" of this video, would take away from it. I hope we will fi...

This site is absolutely the best collected thinking and "information library" on hi-fi I have found, in almost 60 years at this, and your writing, belabored or not, is at the heart of it. Having edited and published a non-profit, monthly "literary jo...

HL Menken was kind of a jerk in some ways, but he also got a lot right, including: "Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people."https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/nobody_ever_went_broke_underestimating_the_intelligence...

No, I see the comparison with PP3000 just as you've described it. I actually love it that in both cases they "just do the job", and I especially love it that in this case it really is "very little" to get it going, as well. My "tone" is not due to sk...

Much clearer with the drawings; thanks again, Romy. So, if I listen to my old jazz LPs recorded live at The Village Gate with the DSP-Z9 on that setting I would be getting a double dose of ambience, along with the extra stuff the recording engineers ...
|
Thanks for sharing, Romy! "Micro" and "macro" "schematics" would be a nice adjunct, to show how you hook up electronics and speakers, as well as speaker positioning. Of course, lots of recordings are treated with synthetic reverb, so those are gettin...

Sure, we can "overcome" the "sonic obstacles" and wind up in Audio Heaven, and there seems to be any number of ways this can happen. I really wish I knew how to make this continuous! Of course, many experienced people have sung the praises of Dr. Gaw...

It seems we are trying to fill our listening spaces with enough "relevant" information (in the form of Sound) to allow us to participate in a Musical performance. I agree that it's extremely difficult to charge a large space, and the bigger the space...

It seems to happen often enough that I have some idea of how I want to change my system, broadly in terms of sound, but it takes me a while to figure it out and get it done. I remember quite a few "ambience systems" over the years, including the orig...
|
I was thinking, 4 - 5" drivers might be "too small" for proper tone and "space" for it; better to use as large as possible vs. as small as possible. Your injection channels will satisfy my curiosity on that score, anyway. Good luck with DPOLS for it....
|
I forget if you started out by setting the phase and level(s) of your ULF with DSP to begin with. Not to cave in to herd mentality, but it might be "worth it" to rent a DSP/D (servo) amp(s) combo to play with. If nothing else, that amp has to modulat...
|
Romy, is this a trick question? You are the only person I know of with time aligned, true IB ULF channels using 4 Aurasound sub-woofers, so who's going to answer your question? The first thought that came to my mind was how some "Big Music" composer...

I think I remember James saying that the center channel should be the strongest channel, and if this is the case he might not scrub the full 6 dB from the L+R "sum". James did say the device "corrects" for mistakes embedded in the original, wrongly-c...

Well, that's the best "explanation" I've read on the Trinaural Processor, better than the SST website blurb, for sure. Mr. Bongiorno was very warm and generous in person, and his verbal explanation to me was actually the best I got. I guess I "under...
|
Romy, during my own quest for a center channel I met (the late) James Bongiorno, all of which I've written about before at GSC. James was a passionate proponent of the center channel, and to that end he developed the Trinaural Processor, which is ana...

Apt image, Romy. Meanwhile, a visit to any of several "pro sound" sites makes it clear that DSP is the way of it now; that bridge has been crossed and turned into a super highway. Most of these guys have stopped looking at digitization as a problem; ...

I continued to correspond with the late J Gordon Holt after he stopped doing Sterophile stuff. Gordon continued on as a recording engineer who infamously insisted on sonic verisimilitude, by which he meant that the system should "correctly" reproduce...

After 15 years I still enjoy mining this website! Today I was thinking again of Clark Johnsen, and I found this link on a memorial site:https://positive-feedback.com/Issue69/clark.htmSorry, you'll have to copy and paste (or highlight and activate); b...

Speak of the devil, here's the latest digital "equalizer" from Accuphase:https://www.accuphase.com/model/dg-68.htmlI didn't read it yet, but I gather it corrects/equalizes not just one's system but it also does room "voicing". Wow.Paul S...

Put the "differences" idea in the bank. We want "insight" and "involvement"; a "connection", as it were; not just the sound, per se, but the performances, and the performance as a whole. Also consider that Time is a factor; we may "get tired of" a gi...

Are you saying you plan full range DSP? Don't think there would be much support for that here. The general idea for all drivers is to give them a light, "optimal" work load, both in terms of frequency response and "SPL". You want "headroom", and you ...
|
The thing about horns is, "developing" them consumes a lot in terms of time and materials, and they are expensive to materialize. SPL modeling programs can be great for getting in the ballpark, but YMMV when it comes to "level of demands" from a hi-f...

The more one knows about the process, the more unlikely it appears that we'll ever get our problems solved! Certainly, the switch to computers has not made things appear less convoluted! Rube Goldberg is IMMORTAL!Thanks, Adrian.Best regards,Paul S...

Robin, I don't know why, but for no reason at all I was thinking the 1" polyester driver was a dome! Its being a compression driver likely means a 2" diaphragm, and it certainly opens the door for sub-2kHz performance. Actually, it's 8" drivers doing...
|
The drivers are said to be 2@15", paper; 2@8", paper; 1@5", paper; 1@1", polyester. The X/Os are shown as 45Hz, 260Hz, and 2kHz. Does this mean that the 8" drivers are driven down to 45Hz; the 5" driver is driven down to 260Hz; the 1" polyester tweet...

Yes, the sound reinforcement people, and most of the recording engineers, for that matter, have long since gone over to The Dark Side, using digital processing start to finish. They also mostly reinforce the "popular" music. It's the root idea of the...

I have to admit that Tom Danley is one of a handful of audio Svengalis that hypnotize me. This effort appears to be aimed at home audio, for a change, complete with built-in amps, more or less plug and play. This speaker will likely perform to PA spe...
